East Devon’s recent Level 2 Devon School Games qualifying round for the Year 3 & 4 mini tennis red competition provided some very close competition and a lovely atmosphere for players and spectators.
Once again the event enjoyed excellent attendance with 12 schools from across East Devon making the journey to Exmouth tennis centre. Exmouth, Uffculme, Cullompton, Honiton and Axe Valley local learning communities were represented as the interest and ambition to reach East Devon School Games Finals and the Devon School Games finals continues.
All players were wonderfully attentive during the event briefing and were excellent ambassadors fr their schools both on and off court.
The 12 schools competed in 4 pools of 3 with the top 2 schools from each group progressing to the quarter –finals stage in the main competition. St Peter’s, St Mary’s, Seaton, St Joseph’s, The Duchy, Uffculme, Clyst Hydon and Offwell primary schools emerged to take their places in the quarter finals after some understandably nervous opening matches. The third placed pool teams: Upottery, Hemyock, All Saints and Colyton moved into the plate competition. Colyton and Upottery were the victors in the plate semi-finals setting up well –matched plate –final.
The quarter –finals of the main competition saw some close individual matches and after some high quality tennis it was St Joseph’s, Clyst Hydon, Seaton and Uffculme who took the semi-final placings. The plate final saw an improving Colyton team in very good form as they defeated Upottery by 39 points to 27.
The semi- finals of the main competition were won by last year’s losing finalist St Joseph’s as they defeated Uffculme Primary School 31-24 and Seaton Primary School who overcame Clyst Hydon in a very close match by just 36-32 points. St Joseph’s had the edge in the final and although Seaton’s girls won both thioer matches St Joseph’s boys saw the Exmouth Primary School safely to victory by 34 – 25 We wish both schools good luck when they represent East Devon in the Devon Summer School Games finals in Plymouth on June 22nd.
All matches were ably officiated by young Sports Leaders from Exmouth Community College who were fantastic throughout the afternoon. A super atmosphere saw all players and teams in supportive and encouraging and mood, and highly appreciative of some exceptional individual and team performances. The School Games values of respect, honesty, self-belief, determination and teamwork and passion were displayed in abundance. Well done to Indigo from St Joseph’s and Bjorn from Colyton on their success as our Spirit of the Games prize winners. It was also lovely to see some of East Devon’s smaller primary schools competing at East Devon Finals and making the step beyond cluster competitions.
Well done to all players on their efforts and a big thank you to Leisure East Devon and tennis Centre manager Jo Louis and her staff for their support of the event.
