Rounders still a hit for East Devon participants

Despite being cut as an activity in GCSE specifications the striking and fielding sport remained exciting and popular amongst the 80+ players taking part in East Devon U11 finals

East Devon School Games hubsite - The King’s School played host to the 2017 East Devon School Games Year 5/6 Rounders finals on Friday 16th June 2017.

After a grim week of weather that saw two events cancelled last week the re-arranged Quad kids and Rounders competitions this week enjoyed balmy evenings and glorious sunshine. The fifth year of the Rounders competition saw some excellent all round play in terms of bowling batting and fielding and although sadly All Saints, Ottery St Mary and Upottery primary schools were unable to make the re-arranged date, 7 teams were able to enjoy some fine games. This year's Level 2 Devon School Games qualifier was contested by Beer, Plymtree, Woodbury, Uffculme, Bassett’s Farm ‘A’ and ‘B’ and Sidbury primary schools. The young players made excellent progress throughout the competition

Woodbury, Plymtree and both Bassett’s Farm teams emerged from the group stages to take the semi- final berths with Uffculme, Sidbury and Beer playing some high quality Rounders in a plate competition which could well in previous years have been worthy of the semi-finals. The four preliminary pools had provided some very close encounters and entertaining games with Uffculme particularly unlucky not to gain a semi-final berth. Victories at the semi –final stage saw Bassett’s Farm ‘A’ and Woodbury secure a place in the final. Bassett’s Farm prevailed as they hit top form in the final, winning by 7˝ rounders to Woodbury’s ˝ rounder.

The bronze medal match was a very close game, just edged by Bassett’s Farm ‘B’ by 7 rounders to Plymtree's 6˝.

A special well done to the Spirit of the Games nominees:

Fraser (Uffculme) Self Belief
Ned (Sidbury Teamwork and passion
Nathaniel (Bassett’s F. 'A') Teamwork and respect
Thea (Plymtree) Self- belief and determination
Lucy (Plymtree) Self –belief and determination
Olivia (Woodbury) Self-belief and teamwork

and to the two Spirit of the Games prize winners:

Ruby (Bassett’s Farm ‘B’) Passion
Bobby (Sidbury) Self –belief and passion

Congratulations to Bassett’s Farm ‘A’ who in taking the top spot, will represent East Devon at the Devon Summer School Games finals in Plymouth on June 22nd.

A big thank you to all staff and parents for their support and a special thank you to the young Sports Leaders from The King’s School who officiated all afternoon.

Congratulations must go to all players who played with great team spirit and skill throughout and withstood the hot and sticky conditions admirably.
