Quad kids beats the weather 2nd time around

East Devon’s recent Level 2 Devon School Games qualifying round for the Year 5 & 6 Quadkids athletics competition provided some very close and competitive field events and hotly contested races on the track.

Fortunately after a week of poor weather and a re-scheduled date all qualifying schools managed to attend the new date. The event, now in its 5th year, enjoyed blisteringly hot Summer weather and very good attendance with 10 schools winning through to the East Devon finals via local learning community competitions.

Over 80 young athletes attended, with some excellent support from staff and parents. All but one East Devon local learning communities were represented as Bassett’s Farm, Seaton, Honiton, Willand, Kentisbeare, Kilmington, Brixington, Uffculme, Payembury and Plymtree primary schools battled it out for the East Devon place at the Devon Summer School Games finals.

The events which included standing long jump, vortex throw, 75m sprint and a 600m run were superbly marshalled and judged by young Sports Leaders from The King’s School. A fantastic atmosphere saw all athletes in supportive, encouraging and vocal mood, and highly appreciative of some exceptional individual and team performances. The athletes and spectators really went out of their way to create a special atmosphere. Schools also took time to test their hand-eye coordination at a ‘Crazy catch’ rest station.

Results were very close as Bassett’s Farm Primary School, Uffculme Primary School and Seaton Primary School contested the top 3 spots and the 2017 East Devon title. It was Bassett’s Farm who eventually emerged as winners going one better than their second place in 2015.

A special well done should go to our Spirit of the Games winners:

Neve from Willand (determination and self belief
Ediz from Kentisbeare (determination)

and to the individual performers below who were the top 3 scoring girls and boys:

1st Catie L (Honiton) 206 points
2nd Martha R (Uffculme) 194 points
3rd Johana K (Bassett’s Farm) 192 points

1st Sam G (Payhembury) 260 points
2nd Charlie H (Kentisbeare) 248 points
3rd Archie W (Willand) 241 points

We wish Bassett’s Farm the best of luck as East Devon’s representatives at The Summer School Games Finals on Thursday 22nd June in Plymouth.
